In October of 2007 Visteon Corporation sold there complex in Sandusky to Automotive Components Holdings, LLC and as part of the transfer Visteon Corporation agreed to remove 1- Concrete Coal Silo that measured 40’ in Diameter by 85’ tall and 1- Glass Block Ash Silo with an load out Hopper which measured 24’ in diameter by 70’ tall.
After obtaining a contract from Visteon Corporation, we worked under the supervision of Automotive Components Engineering Plant Manager Arthur W. Siverling. We started the work in the last week of November 2007 and completed all work by January 4, 2008. All work went well with out any incident and/or injuries.
The project was very interesting in that the Coal and Ash Silo’s where located just 5’ from the south wall of the operating plant. We first install Kevlar Plating on the roof and along the south wall of the operating plant to avoid any damage from falling debris. Once all the safety devices where installed we employed our Cat 245 High Reach Excavator equipped with a concrete pulverizer to literally munch down the structures and insure that all debris fall into the center of the said silo’s. Because this plant was in full operations we had to suppress all dust with water and clean-up all debris on the ground at the end of each day.
Independence processed all concrete with the pulverizer removing all rebar and imbedded steel then sent all the concrete to a crusher for further recycling and all metals were sent to a local electric arc furnace shop for recycling. Upon completion of the removal, down to 6” below existing surrounding grade, Independence filled all voids with asphalt pavement and leveled it to meeting existing surrounding grade so as to leave the site in a neat, clean, safe, level condition.
