In November of 2005 Independence bid the razing of the ArcelorMittal – Weirton Sinter Plant and came out as the successful low bidder in a group of eight other demolition contractors. The sinter plant was an 80’ wide by 225’ long by 140’ tall multi-story metal building which housed conveyors, particle presses and bricket molds. Sinter plants take blast furnace sludge/dust, which contain large amounts of iron, and make it into brickets which are then re-feed into the furnaces helping reduce the amount of materials going to landfills. This facility was abandoned and deemed safe after they shut down all iron producing facilities.
The complex was located between the blast furnace high line and the waste water treatment plant. 70% of the structure had to be sectioned apart by means of flame cutting torches and a 150 ton hydro crane that was used to lower all components to the ground to avoid damage to the other surrounding facilities. Once the structure was reduced down to 42’ in height, we brought in a Cat 345 excavator equipped with a rotating shear to complete the razing process down to existing surrounding grade. All steel and non-ferrous metals where prepared on-site then load into ArcelorMittal gondola rail cars for shipment and recycling at their Indiana Harbor Plant in East Chicago, Indiana.
The project took approximately 6 months to complete and we generated 8,200 gross tons of steel for re-use. Upon completion of razing the complex, Independence graded the entire area so that ArcelorMittal could use the property for storage of spare parts.
As a result of performing the work on time without incident or injuries, ArcelorMittal – Weirton gave us many more opportunities to bid on all their demolition projects.
We performed the follow projects from 2005 to present day for ArcelorMittal:
Independence has completed the aforementioned work generating 100,000 plus gross tons of carbon scrap for re-use and some 2,000,000 pounds of non-ferrous metals.
