Homer City Generating Station Demolition

Independence Demolition (ID) was mobilized on short notice by Homer City Redevelopment (HCR) to execute the accelerated demolition of the former Homer City Generating Station—once one of the largest coal-fired power plants east of the Mississippi River. With redevelopment timelines looming, ID was tasked with completing a large-scale demolition program under an aggressive and evolving schedule.

The initial scope included 109,000 gross tons of structural demolition and recycling over a planned nine-month duration. Despite delayed project start conditions and significant scope growth, ID advanced the schedule—completing core demolition activities months ahead of baseline while concurrently supporting added decommissioning, foundation removal, and on-site concrete processing.

Execution required a highly coordinated, team-driven approach to overcome challenges including weather impacts, sequencing constraints, equipment demands, and evolving client needs. At peak performance, ID’s recycling operations processed and shipped nearly 80,000 tons of scrap within the first three months of 2025, including a single-month high of 32,000 tons.

Environmental services included the safe handling and removal of oils, chemical tanks, transformers, and universal waste, along with support for ongoing asbestos abatement efforts.

The project was supported by a workforce of approximately 130 skilled union personnel and a fleet of more than 65 major pieces of equipment operating across multiple shifts. A combination of explosive felling, engineered dismantling, and heavy civil techniques enabled ID to maintain production and meet critical redevelopment milestones.

ID’s ability to accelerate schedule, adapt to evolving scope, and safely deliver complex demolition at scale positioned the team as a key partner in advancing the site’s transformation.
